These versatile, lightweight crampons work well for glacier and snow travel, and
can handle moderately technical ice. Mated with flexible boots, the 12-point Aiguilles
are comfortable for walking; strapped to rigid boots, they handle steep ice –
up to about 70 degrees – without a hitch. They’ll go steeper than. without antibod
that for short stretches, but unless you’ve got great technique and buff
calves, long passages of vertical ice require a stiffer crampon, such as DMM’s
asymmetric Terminator model.
The Aiguille’s heel throw and toe straps are easy to adjust and hold securely
to boot with either attachment style (pneumatic or bail channels) Changing the
length is easy: A chrome bar and spring-loaded pin in the instep snap easily
in and out of place, allowing you to slide the cage to the right length. For
minor adjustments, the steel bail of the heel throw can be moved between four
small holes.
